PCERT Foundation
The starting point in the international openBIM certification programme. Understand openBIM principles, international standards and project information management according to the ISO 19650 series — with no prior knowledge or certification required.
Why professional certification?
In recent years we have seen an accelerated adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) across the world. Even so, there is still a great deal of confusion and a lack of consistency in defining processes and in agreeing on basic terms and concepts. There is also a wide disparity in the competence of the industry professionals who manage and deliver BIM projects.
For BIM adoption to succeed, we need consensus on the use of standardised terminology and processes and a benchmarking mechanism against which the competence of individuals can be measured.
By publishing international standards for digital ways of working (such as the ISO 19650 series), an important contribution has been made towards establishing a coherent global language. buildingSMART supports the creation and adoption of these standards, and professional certification provides a global benchmark for assuring BIM competencies — helping employers recruit and giving client organisations transparency when procuring competent teams.
An internationally recognised path
The buildingSMART Professional Certification (PCert) programme offers an internationally recognised professional development path in openBIM. Whether you are just starting out with BIM or want to consolidate your competencies on complex projects, there is a certification level suited to you.
Two levels of the programme are available in Romania: PCert Foundation and PCert Practitioner.
What you learn at Foundation
The BIM Fundamentals Professional exam covers 28 learning outcomes (Learning Outcome Fundamentals), grouped into 5 main topics:
- Understand what openBIM is, why it is needed, and know the specific terminology.
- Identify the advantages of openBIM over traditional project development and delivery.
- Understand project information management when using openBIM, in line with the ISO 19650 series.
- Recognise the need for open and interoperable solutions.
- Identify an organisation's capability to work with openBIM.
How you get certified
On completing the course and the international exam, participants earn the buildingSMART Foundation Qualified (bQ) qualification and an internationally recognised certificate.
Professionals who have completed a course approved by buildingSMART Romania can take the online exam to earn the BIM Fundamentals Professional Qualification (the base module). To sit the exam, the student must have completed an approved course and paid the associated fee.
The exam is administered through the buildingSMART Professional Certification online platform, based on the Moodle learning platform. After passing, the student receives a certificate and, if they wish, is listed among the certified professionals on the buildingSMART Romania and buildingSMART International websites.
